The Basis of the Bond
Fraternities in and of themselves are more than anything, about the bond among the members. The DePauw Chapter of Delta Chi is no exception. Associate and active members have a place in the house and as the college years pass, that bond becomes stronger, richer, and more meaningful. The bond itself is magnified by various brotherhood sponsored events from the most simple such as a night out for dinner to the more grandeur weekend events such as the Delta Chi formal in the spring. Throughout your experience in Delta Chi you are constantly reminded that you are among men who will be there for you should you ask them, who will respect you and will provide you with ample reasons to find respect for them, and who will stand up for you in a moment's notice whenever the moment comes to pass.
Being Greek means more than just wearing "letters", attending meetings, and going to parties. Being a part of Delta Chi is about making friendships that will last far beyond your college years, while enhancing your personal development. This is achieved by committing to ideals of scholarship, leadership, and service. Being a Delta Chi means being respected for your individuality, while being part of a brotherhood of individuals who share a common friendship, bond, and commitment to one another. Your brothers are there to support you, helping to make the journey through college easy and enjoyable.
Greek individuals comprise only 2% of the population of the United States. However, this 2% comprises a very successful group of individuals:
• Over 85% of the student leaders on some 730 campuses are involved in the Greek community.
• All but eight U.S. Presidents born after 1825 have been fraternity men. Today, 76% of all U.S.Congressmen and Senators are Greek.
• Of the United States' 50 largest corporations, 43 are led by fraternity men or sorority women.
• Undergraduate fraternity and sorority members raise over $7 million for charity every year.
• A U.S. Government study shows that over 70% of all those who join a fraternity/ sorority graduate, while less than 50% of all non-fraternity/sorority persons graduate.
• Students who join Greek organizations are more likely to return to school the following year.
• Greeks volunteer over 850,000 hours annually across North America.
• Approximately 85% of the top executives of Fortune 500 companies belong to a fraternity or sorority.
This does not mean that if you join a fraternity or sorority, you will automatically be successful. It does mean that the skills and experiences gained while in a fraternity or sorority can help put you on a path toward success. You still have to get there through personal effort.
The Members of Delta Chi
The purpose of Delta Chi is to strengthen the Scholarship of our members, to promote Brotherhood and to develop Leadership, to engage DePauw with Community Service , to support the Philanthropic efforts of our organizations, DePauw and the community of Greencastle, to build the Character and Integrity of our members, to affirm personal and organizational Responsibility, and to support the Mission and Goals of DePauw University.
All the aforementioned purposes are strengthened and made possible through the collected work of generations upon generations of Delta Chi's. Therefore, the final purpose of Delta Chi is to remain in contact with the great men who have gone through in the past and work with them as we continue to better ourselves and our community for generations to come.
The Ten Basic Expectations of a Delta Chi
Delta Chi also has a collection of expectations for each member to uphold. These Ten Basic Expectations serve as an extension of our Preamble and give us more specific principles to live by:
1. I will strive for academic achievement and practice academic integrity.
2. I will respect the dignity and worth of all persons. I will not physically, mentally, psychologically or sexually abuse or haze any human being.
3. I will protect the health and safety of all human beings.
4. I will respect my property and the property of others; therefore, I will neither abuse nor tolerate the abuse of property.
5. I will meet my financial obligations in a timely manner.
6. I will neither use nor support the use of illegal drugs; I will neither abuse nor support the abuse of alcohol.
7. I will acknowledge that a clean and attractive environment is essential to both physical and mental health; therefore, I will do all in my power to see that the chapter property is safe, properly cleaned and maintained.
8. I will know and understand the ideals expressed in my fraternity Ritual and will incorporate them into my daily life.
9. I will exercise compassion and understanding in dealing with all persons.
10. I will challenge all my fraternity members to abide by these fraternity obligations and will confront those who violate them.
Delta Chi Hazing Position and Policy
"We, the members of The Delta Chi Fraternity, believing that great advantages are to be derived from a brotherhood of college and university men, appreciating that close association may promote friendship, develop character, advance justice, and assist in the acquisition of a sound education, do ordain and establish this Constitution".
Simply put, there is no right way to do a wrong thing. At Delta Chi we don’t haze. Our pledgeship program is based on team-building and welcoming and integrating our new brothers into the chapter.
Delta Chi “pledges” are given more membership rights then any other national fraternity. Refereed to as “Associate Members” and not pledges, Associate Members can vote in all elections, run for any chair position, and vote on any issue except for issues of membership granting and revoking.
Furthermore, our chapter policies stipulate that no Associate Member may be compelled to do any job or activity not required of full members.
We believe that demeaning activities only lead to resentment and division, and they have no place in the chapter. Associate Members and parents who have concerns are encouraged to voice their concerns to the Associate Member Counsellor, their pledge dads, chapter leadership, or alumni leadership (contact information.)
